You are equipped

“By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭13:21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God provided for the Israelites to travel by DAY or NIGHT. It doesn’t matter the time of day, the season, the amount of light there is or lack thereof, ; you have the resources to travel by day OR night. God doesn’t leave His children without. There is NOTHING stopping you from continuing forward. You cannot make excuses for something you already have. God has equipped you for the journey, it’s up to you to use the resources. Locate the cloud and find the pillar of fire, this is your heavenly compass. You have it in your spiritual tool box. You have your faith, your godly confidence, your resilience, your experiences. Let me encourage you today that you are NOT stuck. You are equipped to move forward.

A spiritual house

“As you come to him, the living stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” –1 Peter 2:4-5

I recently brought my youth I teach through a series titled “living loved” and we focused on the life of Jesus from His birth to when He performed His first miracle. One thing they kept bringing up was if Jesus was always all knowing from birth. And I stressed that just as Luke 2:52 says, Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man just like we need to do. He wasn’t born with all this biblical knowledge and spiritual maturity, He needed to grow in  it. The same is true for us.

Sometimes we want to rush the process of being molded and built into a spiritual house but it takes work. It takes willingness of heart and spirit in order to become who God has called us to be. We need to be content in the process allowing God to build, to add, to take away, that we would be mighty soldiers for the kingdom of God. I’ve learned what God does through us on earth is for spiritual kingdom purposes. Whatever your current walk of life, God is using it to prepare you for future preordained plans. So my encouragement for you today is to allow God to build you up which may sometimes look like a breaking down. God is the holy potter that wants you to explore with Him what needs to go and what needs to grow in order for you to be built into a spiritual house.

Strange Fire

“That same day Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s sons, took their censers, put hot coals and incense in them, and offered “strange” fire to God – something God had not commanded. Fire blazed out from God and consumed them – they died in Gods presence.” – Leviticus 10:1-2 MSG

The bible says Aaron’s sons offered up strange fire to God in the context of a holy and sacred offering. They tried to mix holy with unholy and God consumed them; they died the same way they tried to cheat God. The moment you try to bring in an unholy thing into the holy things of God, you automatically negate the sacredness of a holy act. For example, the bible speaks on meditation; to meditate on the word of God but if you begin to practice yoga as a means of meditation, you are bringing “strange fire” into a sacred act. You cannot do yoga and expect it to be a good offering to the Lord because it is a spiritual practice that has its origin in offering incense to other gods.

In the same way, you cannot incorporate practices from other religions into your relationship with the Lord. It is strange fire that is an abomination to the Lord. While God is all loving, it’s important to be aware of your practices and habits. If it is not biblical or biblically supported, you should always bring it to the foot of the cross.

The way everlasting

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” – Psalm 139:23-24

This is a dangerous prayer. David was so bold when he asked God to search him. I’m in a season of God revealing to me things within me that need work; things that do not lead to the way everlasting and it’s hard. You feel bare and naked. You feel exposed. But here David is giving God access because without that invitation, God is not going to force His way in. God is patient and has given you free will for a reason. So if you don’t give Him access to search you, healing won’t happen. Now God doesn’t need to search you, He already knows your heart. But David is saying, “Okay God, you can come in. I invite you in to help me, to mold me, and ultimately to heal me.”

Because the moment you give God that invitation, you are on the road to healing. You are on the road to wholeness. David says, “Lead me in the way everlasting.” What he’s saying is that he can’t get himself to wholeness. Another yoga class or deep breathing exercise is not gonna get him on the right path. Another bible study class or life group isn’t going to open the door to fulfillment. Another diet or self help book isn’t going to set him on the straight and narrow. But Jesus is. Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the light.” These things might help but you need to allow God to search you so that He can heal you from the inside out.

Jesus can bring light where there is darkness. He can set you on the right road when you are lost. He can guide you out of the lies and into the truth. And the truth is, we all need work. I know I do! We are all a project only God can take on and bring to full completion. The bible says God brings every good work He begins in us to completion; you know why? Because He loves you, He cares for you, and He’s concerned about the smallest details of your life. He wants you healed that others may be Healed too. The way everlasting is to say “Hey, Jesus, come on in. There’s more than enough room for you.”

Let them hear

Every time I speak to my friend April, the first thing she asks me is, “What has the Lord been teaching you this week?” Even though I know she’ll ask me this, it always takes me by surprise each time. There are days when I answer with my best spiritual knowledge quoting exact verses from the bible and other times, I’m honest and tell her I have no idea. But each time, I walk away from my phone reflecting on that question.

When I started Project Healing, it began as a means of sharing what God was teaching me through the bible, through prayer, and through other people. So as I thought about what to speak on for this newsletter, I felt God ask me that very question; “What have I been teaching you in this season?” Without any doubt, the answer was simple: to listen.

In the very last book of the bible, Jesus is speaking to John through a vision concerning His people. In Revelation 2:29, Jesus says, “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” That sounds super deep and profound right? Now let’s make it more personal. When Jesus says “Spirit”, He’s referring to God in Spirit form. And when He says “the churches”, He’s referring to you and me. So now let’s paraphrase a bit. “Whoever has ears, let them hear what God says to me.” Wait. Read that again. . . Seriously. Read it again. Okay good.

In this verse, Jesus isn’t saying whether we have ears or not, we all have physical ears. But Jesus is saying “Whoever has spiritual ears, let them hear”. We all have spiritual ears. Some are in tune with the station of your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your spouse, your mom, your pain, and even your insecurities. But God wants you to be in tune with the frequency of heaven, it’s how you’ll hear what God is saying to you.

Did you know God speaks? God is not a silent God. From the very beginning of the bible, God speaks the world into existence. Not only that but all throughout, God is speaking through people, to people, and for people. But are you tuned into 77.7fm? It’s the station where the angels sing and Jesus is teaching. It’s the station where God speaks in still small whispers. It’s the station you keep changing to hear something more “entertaining”.

There are so many things in this world that pull for our attention and even when they are not, we are looking for something to fill the silence. As a generation, we have lost the art of simple listening. What does that mean? That means clearing out the junk from the outside world and all of the surrounding noise, in order to hear what God is saying to you.

From the moment you were in your mothers womb, you have been listening to what others have been saying to you. But when was the last time you sat in Gods presence and listened to God?

I want to challenge you today to find a quiet moment and ask God the first question that pops into your mind. Whatever that question may be, do not push it away. Invite it in and ask God. I guarantee you there are some things God has been speaking to you about but you’ve allowed others to feed you their empty opinions. God wants to speak to you today but you have to be willing to listen.

Let us pray

Father God, I thank you that you still speak. I thank you that you want to speak to me. So I ask in this moment that you would remove all the junk that has been clouding my spiritual ears. Clean out my ears so I would be able to hear you and only you. Tune me into the station of heaven and remove the things and people that are not helping me hear you. God I want you to speak to me today, so help me hear you, oh Holy Spirit.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Bible study Wednesday

A few days ago, a friend of mine and I started a study on the book of revelation. Because we can’t meet up everyday, we decided to share our insights through text after reading a chapter. So far it’s been amazing and so life giving. . . To be honest, I’ve been in sort of a spiritual low so I asked my friend April to do this study in hopes that it would uplift both of us.

I think sometimes we get so caught up in what needs to be done and we become overwhelmed with the burdens of the present that we forget the end goal. At least it’s true for me that I often times get lost in transition. I know what I have to do but I get caught in the pressure of doing it. And that’s exactly what stood out for me in revelation chapters 2-3.

Here Jesus is speaking to His churches and He points out that he knows their struggles but if they only stand firm and push through, they will be victorious. That’s the downfall sometimes, we become wrapped up in the pushing that we don’t allow ourselves to get through. But it’s in the getting through that we see and experience Gods glory. I remember I heard a preacher once say that it’s good that you’re going through things because at least you’re getting through!

If we only hang on like Paul says in Philippians 3:12-14,“. . . I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul understands that he has present struggles but he rejoices in going through them because of what he’s left behind and what is promised him in the future.

2 Timothy 4: 7-8 Paul says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” God tells us that he doesn’t allow for us to go through pains without something beautiful being born. And that’s what Paul is saying here, he’s saying I’ve pushed through, I’ve trained and run the race,  I’ve allowed God to change me through my trials so that I can get to the end goal.

Revelation chapters 2-3 show us that Jesus has amazing things in store for those who push through, get through, and finish the race. Jesus promises paradise, a new name, white garments, and a crown of victory. God is so good, so faithful, and so loving that he has a reward for you and me and everyone that pushes through for His names sake.

I pray that we all finish the race so that we can rejoice in Gods presence because He who promises always fulfills.

Be blessed!
