The Invitation

Invitations are reminders of a party that is being prepared for your attendance. They come early giving you time to prepare and R.S.V.P. in advance. Although you don’t know who else is invited, you know that your presence is wanted. There’s something special about being picked to attend someone’s party. It makes you feel important and needed. Isn’t that what we all long for? We want to know that we’re important enough to be invited to a special celebration; but what happens when the day actually comes? Will you make excuses because you couldn’t find the perfect outfit or the best shoes? Will you not attend because of your own selfish desires?

In Luke 14, Jesus begins telling a story to his disciples about a great banquet that a certain man had prepared. This man invited many people to his banquet but when the day came, every person invited had an excuse as to why they couldn’t come. What some people don’t realize is that the man Jesus was speaking about in this story was Him! Jesus has been preparing a beautiful banquet just for you! The beauty of this banquet is that Jesus isn’t asking you to change in order to attend. All he wants is for you to accept the invitation. In Luke 14:17, it says, “At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come for everything is now ready.’ The bible doesn’t say that Jesus wants you to change before you can attend the banquet. All Jesus says is ‘Come’. Jesus has been sending you invitation after invitation and you still haven’t responded. He hasn’t given up on you. He hasn’t stopped pursuing you. You continue to feel that gentle tug on your heart to RSVP to that invitation to His table. But you continue to make excuses.

I need to remind you that the things you’ve done, what you’ve been through, the decisions you’ve made do not disqualify you from the kingdom of God. You have an invitation because God specifically chose you for that special seat that no one can fill but you. You don’t even need to prepare. You don’t need to buy a new dress or iron your slacks. You don’t even need to splash on your most expensive cologne. No, ALL you have to do is accept the invitation.

Jesus wants to celebrate you. So won’t you accept the invitation to the table of the Lord? And you know what the most amazing thing about this banquet is? It’s that God isn’t even asking you to pay the bill! He’s already paid the bill in advance when He sent His son to die on the cross. When you reread that verse Jesus says. “Come for everything is now ready.” The time to RSVP is now. Jesus has already prepared the table for you. He’s already extended the heavenly invitation. The table is all set. All you have to do is trust and believe that God has promised you a seat at His table. Believe that He has prepared the banquet for THIS appointed time and anointed hour for you. . .

How many more excuses will you make before responding to Jesus’ invitation to His table?
